Galatasaray Target George Ilenikhena as Victor Osimhen Exit Looms: Nigerian-Born Striker Twice Tormented Barcelona

Galatasaray appear to be taking proactive steps in their transfer planning, with the Turkish club reportedly setting their sights on 19-year-old Nigerian-born striker George Ilenikhena as a contingency measure amid growing speculation surrounding Victor Osimhen‘s future at the club.

Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray on loan from SSC Napoli, has made a record-breaking impact in Istanbul, attracting reported interest from La Liga heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid. Should the Super Eagles forward depart, club officials are according to reports keen to avoid being left short-handed in attack — and Ilenikhena has emerged as a leading candidate to fill that void.

Galatasaray are said to be weighing an initial loan move for the forward, with the possibility of a permanent transfer depending on how circumstances develop. Born in Lagos and raised in France, Ilenikhena began his senior career at Amiens SC, where he became Ligue 2’s youngest-ever goalscorer at the age of 16 — an early indication of his extraordinary potential.

His ascent continued at Royal Antwerp, where he etched his name into the history books as the youngest Nigerian-born player to score in the UEFA Champions League. That goal arrived in a 3-2 victory over FC Barcelona — Antwerp’s first-ever win in European football’s premier club competition. Ilenikhena then repeated the achievement the following season with AS Monaco, netting the decisive goal in a 2-1 win over the same Spanish opponents, further cementing his reputation as a player who rises to the occasion on the biggest stage.

Despite this impressive pedigree, Ilenikhena’s career has hit a temporary roadblock since completing a €33 million transfer to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad from Monaco. The teenager has failed to score in his first five appearances for the club, raising questions internally about his readiness for the Saudi environment and reportedly opening the door for potential suitors to make their move.

At 1.85 metres, Ilenikhena offers a physical profile that complements his technical attributes — pace, strength, and a powerful left foot — along with the versatility to lead the line or drop into deeper positions to link play. Those qualities have also attracted attention from Serie A side AS Roma and Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, sources suggest, underscoring the level of European interest in the young striker.

His early struggles in Saudi Arabia have prompted discussion about whether a return to European football could accelerate his development. Galatasaray, with their UEFA Champions League experience and a track record of nurturing high-profile forwards — as demonstrated with Osimhen — would represent a credible destination should a move materialise.

The coming months are likely to prove decisive on multiple fronts: Osimhen’s future will hinge on summer transfer developments involving Barcelona and Real Madrid, while Ilenikhena’s trajectory at Al-Ittihad will determine how aggressively clubs are willing to pursue him. For Galatasaray, securing a successor of comparable quality before any potential departure would represent a significant piece of long-term squad management.
