Coventry City secured the Sky Bet Championship title on Tuesday night with a commanding 5-1 victory over Portsmouth, wrapping up the crown with two games to spare and ending a wait of 25 years to return to the Premier League.

The celebrations were equally significant for Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka, whose loan move from Brentford has now converted into a permanent transfer following promotion. The 28-year-old Nigerian joined Coventry in February 2026 and went on to make 12 Championship appearances, registering one goal and three assists while providing defensive solidity and leadership in midfield under manager Frank Lampard.

The loan agreement contained an obligation-to-buy clause that was automatically triggered upon promotion. According to reports, Coventry will pay a fee of around €7 million to sign Onyeka permanently from Brentford, securing his services for the club’s return to the Premier League next season.

Promotion had been mathematically confirmed the previous Friday following a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers, with Tuesday’s dominant home victory over Portsmouth adding the championship trophy to an already historic campaign for the Sky Blues.

Reflecting on the achievement via his official X account, Onyeka wrote: “History doesn’t happen overnight… it takes 25 years. Promotion…Champions. Proud to play a part in something special.”

Onyeka had struggled to command regular first-team football at Brentford prior to the move, making the mid-season switch to Coventry a pivotal moment in his career. The loan spell afforded him the opportunity to rediscover consistent form, and the automatic purchase clause means he will now remain at the club as they prepare for top-flight competition.

Coventry’s return to the Premier League is notable not only for its length of absence — the club were last in England’s top division in the 2000-01 season — but also for the manner in which it was achieved. Lampard guided the side to the title, reinforcing his credentials as a manager capable of delivering promotion campaigns.

For Onyeka, the move represents a return to the Premier League with a different club. The defensive midfielder previously featured in the top flight with Brentford following their promotion in 2021, and will now look to establish himself at Coventry as they navigate their first season back among England’s elite.

Nigeria will also be watching closely, as Onyeka’s club form will be a factor in his availability and standing within the Super Eagles setup ahead of upcoming international fixtures and the continued road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
