Frank Lampard has moved swiftly to quash rumours connecting him to Chelsea, making clear that his attention is firmly fixed on Coventry City after guiding the club to Premier League promotion.

The speculation emerged following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior at Stamford Bridge, with Lampard — a club legend both as a player and former head coach — touted as a potential candidate to return. However, speaking ahead of Coventry’s fixture against Wrexham, the former England international was unequivocal in his response.

“Well, I definitely don’t want to talk about Liam and Chelsea because I’ve been there. I never want to talk too much about managers because of context behind the scenes. I think it’s disrespectful to have a judgement on it. That’s for pundits to have a judgement,” Lampard said.

He then turned attention back to his current position, leaving little ambiguity about where his priorities lie. “I’m Coventry manager, I’m enjoying my moment of us being promoted and winning the title, and that’s it,” he added.

Lampard’s remarks come at a significant moment for Coventry City, who have secured a return to the top flight for the first time in approximately 25 years. The achievement represents a landmark in the club’s recent history and a major milestone in Lampard’s managerial career outside of the Premier League.

The Chelsea connection runs deep for Lampard. As a player, he spent 13 years at Stamford Bridge and is widely regarded as one of the club’s greatest ever midfielders, winning three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League among numerous honours. He later managed Chelsea between 2019 and 2021, before a brief interim spell in 2023, making the speculation around any potential return particularly prominent in English football circles.

Nigerian midfielder John Onyeka has been credited as a key contributor to Coventry’s promotion campaign, with Lampard previously heaping praise on the player following his first goal for the club against Derby County. Onyeka’s performances have been central to the team’s title-winning run.

With Coventry now preparing for Premier League football, Lampard faces the considerable task of assembling a squad capable of competing at the highest level of English football. Their return to the top flight will demand significant squad investment and tactical adjustments, with recruitment likely to be a primary focus in the coming months.

As Chelsea continue their search for a permanent manager following Rosenior’s exit, Lampard’s firm denial effectively removes him from immediate consideration — at least publicly. Whether the club’s ownership pursues alternative targets in the short term remains to be seen.
