Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has singled out Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka for exceptional praise, crediting the Nigerian international’s mentality and work ethic as key factors in the club’s promotion to the Premier League.
Onyeka joined Coventry City on loan from Brentford during the winter transfer window and swiftly established himself as an integral part of the team’s midfield. His ball-winning ability, positional discipline, and high-energy performances helped stabilise the side as Coventry mounted a successful promotion push.
“Frank has been brilliant,” Lampard said of the midfielder. “He was a profile of a player we needed in that moment and he’s come in and given us everything we need.” The Coventry boss also acknowledged that Onyeka’s arrival brought important structural balance to the club’s midfield.
Beyond his on-pitch contributions, it was Onyeka’s character that drew particular admiration from Lampard, a three-time Premier League champion during his playing days at Chelsea. “The other thing he has offered is an incredible humility and work ethic. He’s come down from the Premier League as an international player, and he is so humble,” the former Chelsea captain and manager said.
Lampard further highlighted the positive influence Onyeka’s professionalism has had on younger members of the squad. “I love that and it’s good for some of our players to see what that looks like,” he added.
Onyeka, who has been a consistent presence in the Super Eagles midfield setup, made his move to Coventry from Brentford, where he had struggled for regular first-team minutes in the top flight. His Championship loan spell represents a significant resurgence in form and confidence at club level.
Following the successful loan arrangement, Coventry are reportedly set to activate a purchase option within his agreement with Brentford, with the move expected to be made permanent in the coming weeks. The development would represent a notable transfer for a Coventry side preparing to compete in the Premier League for the first time in decades.
For Onyeka, a permanent switch would offer the platform of top-flight football heading into a crucial period for the Super Eagles, as Nigeria continue preparations for ongoing international commitments. His performances at Coventry will have reinforced his credentials as a reliable midfield operator at the highest level of English football.
