Michael Eneramo, a former Nigeria international striker, died on Friday, 24 April 2026, at the age of 40 after collapsing mid-game during a casual match in the Ungwan Yelwa area of Kaduna, close to where he had been residing.

According to reports, the match was being played on a primary school field and had proceeded without incident through the opening half. Witnesses present at the game noted that Eneramo displayed no visible signs of distress during the first half, which reportedly lasted approximately one hour. Within minutes of the second half getting underway, however, he suddenly collapsed, causing immediate panic among those on the pitch and watching from the sidelines.

Emergency responders transported him to a nearby medical facility, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Sports journalist Osasu Obayiuwana shared details of the incident on social media, citing a source identified as @MrMowiz: “He died in Kaduna, Nigeria. Ungwan Yelwa precisely… He slumped after the first half (in a game he was playing)… [He] played the entire first half that lasted one hour.”

Eneramo built a well-travelled professional career that spanned Africa and Europe. He rose to prominence at Espérance de Tunis in Tunisia, where his prolific goal-scoring made him a popular figure at the club. His performances there earned him moves to Turkey, where he went on to represent prominent sides including Beşiktaş, Sivasspor, and İstanbul Başakşehir.

On the international stage, Eneramo earned 10 caps for the Super Eagles, finding the net three times. Among the highlights of his international career was a goal on his debut against Tunisia in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier — a moment that announced him as a credible option at the highest level of Nigerian football. He retired from professional football in 2018 but remained engaged with the sport thereafter.

Eneramo’s death adds to a growing and deeply concerning list of footballers worldwide who have suffered fatal cardiac events during matches or training sessions in recent years. The circumstances of his collapse — during a low-intensity, recreational game — are likely to prompt renewed discussion around cardiac screening protocols for retired professional athletes in Nigeria and across the continent.

The Nigerian football community, including fans, former teammates, and officials, has reacted with widespread shock and grief. No official cause of death has been confirmed at the time of publication. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had not issued a formal statement as of the time this article was filed.

Eneramo was 40 years old. He is survived by family members, though details have not been made public. Tributes continue to pour in across social media platforms from within Nigeria and the broader African football community.
