Felix Agu has called for patience over Victor Boniface‘s return to top-level football, expressing confidence that the Nigerian striker retains the quality to make a meaningful contribution to Werder Bremen before the season concludes.
Boniface, who joined Werder Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has been sidelined for approximately three months following a knee injury that required surgical intervention. According to reports, the 24-year-old has recently resumed individual training at the club, though he has not yet reintegrated into full team sessions. His steady rehabilitation progress has nonetheless been well received by the coaching staff and his fellow players.
Speaking to German outlet Deichstube, Agu offered an upbeat assessment of his compatriot’s situation. “I’m very happy to see him back here because I get along well with him. I think he still needs a little time to get back into his rhythm,” the defender said. “When he drops deep, turns, and plays passes, with such timing, such vision! That’s simply absolute quality.”
Agu also drew on Boniface’s record at Bayer Leverkusen as a benchmark for what the striker is capable of delivering. Boniface was part of the Leverkusen squad that claimed the Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season — the club’s first top-flight championship in their history — a campaign in which his performances established him as one of the more dangerous forwards in German football.
“He wasn’t a key player in Leverkusen’s championship-winning team for nothing,” Agu continued. “If Victor can even come close to that level, then he can help us. The important thing is that he gets back to the fitness level he needs to be able to help us on the pitch for a while.”
The comments from Agu come amid a broader conversation surrounding Boniface’s attitude and commitment during his loan spell. A former Werder Bremen captain previously questioned the striker’s seriousness, while Werder Bremen’s sporting leadership has since praised Boniface for the speed of his recovery, with sources at the club attributing his progress in part to the player’s own dedication to his rehabilitation.
Boniface’s return to fitness carries significance not only for Werder Bremen’s remaining Bundesliga fixtures but also for the Super Eagles, with Nigeria’s international schedule continuing to evolve ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A return to sustained club football would strengthen his case for selection under the national team setup.
For Werder Bremen, who are navigating the second half of the Bundesliga season, the potential availability of a forward of Boniface’s calibre — even in limited capacity — could prove valuable as the club manages its attacking options in the weeks ahead.
