Erling Haaland has offered a measured assessment of Arsenal ahead of what could prove to be a defining Premier League fixture, acknowledging Mikel Arteta’s side as genuine European heavyweights while making clear City’s intentions going into the match.

Speaking to Sky Sports in the build-up to Sunday’s encounter at the Etihad Stadium, the Norwegian striker addressed the growing narrative around the rivalry between the two clubs. When pressed on whether friction existed between City and Arsenal, Haaland was composed in his response. “I don’t know if there’s any friction,” he said. “They want to win, we want to win. In the end, it’s nice, and it’s always good to play against the best teams.”

Haaland also pointed to Arsenal’s performances across all competitions as evidence of their standing in the game. “They are in the semi-finals of the Champions League; that means they’re one of the best teams in Europe,” he stated. “They’re the first place in the Premier League; they’ve been that the whole season, so they are without a doubt one of the best teams in Europe at the moment.”

Arsenal’s position at the top of the Premier League table throughout the 2025/26 campaign underlines the weight of Sunday’s fixture. A City defeat would significantly damage their title hopes, while a win for the home side could shift the momentum of the race considerably.

The personal duel between Haaland and Arsenal centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes has become one of the more compelling sub-plots of this fixture in recent seasons. Their on-pitch battles have added an additional dimension to an already high-stakes contest, and Sunday’s meeting is expected to be no different.

Since arriving at Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022, Haaland has faced Arsenal on ten occasions across all competitions. His record in those matches stands at four wins, three draws, and three losses — one of those defeats coming in the 2023 FA Community Shield. Across those appearances, he has contributed five goals and two assists, statistics he will be targeting to improve as the season reaches its critical final phase.

Arsenal, however, will be without one of their key attacking contributors for the trip to Manchester. According to reports, Bukayo Saka is set to miss the fixture, representing a significant blow for Arteta’s side as they look to protect their league lead.

The result on Sunday carries substantial implications beyond the immediate standings. With the campaign entering its final weeks, both clubs have limited room for error, and a gap established at this stage could prove decisive in determining who lifts the Premier League title come May.
