Calum McFarlane, Chelsea’s interim manager, has pushed back against transfer speculation linked to midfielder Enzo Fernandez following the Argentine’s recent trip to Madrid, describing the visit as evidence of strong team cohesion rather than a cause for concern.
Fernandez travelled to the Spanish capital during a three-day break granted to the entire Chelsea squad, accompanied by teammates Marc Cucurella and Joao Pedro. The group attended the Madrid Open tennis tournament, but the trip attracted wider attention after Fernandez was photographed in close proximity to Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, prompting speculation over a potential move to the La Liga club.
McFarlane was direct in his assessment of the situation. “We gave the lads three days off, and I think it says a lot about the group that they go away together,” he said. “I love the fact that they spend time together. They’ve gone to Madrid to watch tennis, so I don’t see an issue with it, honestly.”
The interim boss also pointed out that this type of collective downtime was not a new development within the squad. “He was there last year with his teammates again,” McFarlane added. “The last time they had a break, they spent time together as well, so I think it’s a positive sign for the unity within the group.”
While questions over Fernandez’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge may surface during the summer transfer window, the 24-year-old remains under contract with Chelsea until June 2032. The club is understood to be prioritising stability as the current campaign enters its final stages.
Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 in a deal worth a reported £106.8 million — a British transfer record at the time — and has been a central figure in the team’s midfield since his arrival. His importance to the side was underlined in the FA Cup semi-final, where he scored the decisive goal in Chelsea’s victory over Leeds United to secure the club’s place in the final.
With the FA Cup final now on the horizon, Chelsea are targeting silverware after what has been an inconsistent domestic season. The club also faces pivotal Premier League fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool before the campaign concludes, fixtures that will shape their final league standing.
McFarlane took interim charge of Chelsea following a managerial change mid-season and has been tasked with steadying the club through a critical period. His defence of Fernandez is consistent with an apparent effort to maintain focus and cohesion within a squad that will be subject to significant scrutiny during the upcoming summer window.
