Emmanuel Fernandez has been recognised by his fellow professionals as one of the standout defenders in Scottish football this season, earning a place in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year for 2025/26 — a distinction that underlines the 24-year-old’s rapid rise since joining Rangers from English League One club Peterborough United in the summer of 2025.

The Nigerian centre-back signed a four-year deal at Ibrox and, despite enduring some early difficulties adjusting to his new surroundings, went on to establish himself as a central figure in manager Danny Röhl’s title-challenging side. His campaign yielded six goals in 28 appearances across all competitions — a considerable attacking contribution for a defender — while his composure in possession and authority in one-on-one duels drew widespread praise from within the game.

Fernandez is the only Rangers player featured in the recognised defensive unit, lining up alongside Motherwell’s Paul McGinn and Heart of Midlothian pair Craig Halkett and Harry Milne in the prestigious selection.

His domestic form carried over into the international arena, where Fernandez earned his first call-up to the Nigerian national team during the recent FIFA international window. He made his Super Eagles debut as a substitute in a 2-1 win over Iran on March 27, before making his first start just four days later and marking the occasion with a goal in a 2-2 draw against Jordan on March 31.

The combination of his PFA Scotland recognition and his Nigeria debut has, according to reports, significantly heightened interest from clubs at the highest level of European football. Several high-profile clubs are reportedly preparing summer transfer bids for the defender, with Premier League sides Chelsea and Arsenal among those frequently cited as potential suitors, though no formal offers have been confirmed.

Fernandez’s trajectory over the past 12 months is particularly notable given his starting point. Peterborough United compete in the third tier of English football, meaning the defender has navigated a significant step up in quality — first to the Scottish Premiership, and then to senior international football — within a single season. Rangers themselves have had a storied history of developing or attracting players who subsequently attract attention from larger clubs, and Fernandez appears to be following a well-worn path.

With the summer transfer window approaching and the Scottish Premiership season drawing to a close, the coming weeks are likely to bring further clarity on Fernandez’s future. For now, his inclusion in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year serves as formal acknowledgment from his peers that his debut campaign at Ibrox has been one of genuine distinction.
