Romelu Lukaku Discloses 'unhappiness' with Role at Chelsea Under Tuchel in Tell-All Interview
- Lukaku recently did an interview where he admitted he was unhappy with Tuchel’s recent team setup that relegated him to the bench
- The Belgian has scored seven goals in 18 appearances since returning to Stamford Bridge in August
- He also hinted at a possible return to Inter Milan in the near future
Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku recently courted controversy in a tell-all interview where he disclosed his woes at Stamford Bridge.
Lukaku, who made a sensational £97.5m return in August, told Sky Sport Italia that he was unhappy with his ‘bit-part’ role at Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel.
"I'm not happy with the situation, this is normal," Lukaku said in the interview that was pre- recorded. "But I am a worker and I must not give up."
Under Tuchel, Lukaku has made eight Premier League starts and has scored five times in 13 league appearances.
His season however took a nasty turn due to injuries and COVID-19, in a period where Chelsea found some form playing with a false-9 setup.
The Belgian's form seems to have come to life, however, as he has scored in the last two Premier League games following discussions over his role with Thomas Tuchel.
He told Sky Sport Italia:
“Physically I’m fine, even better than before. After two years in Italy, in which I worked a lot at Inter with trainers and nutritionists, I am physically fine.
“But I'm not happy with the situation, this is normal. I think the coach has chosen to play with another system, I just have to not give up and continue to work and be a professional.
Lukaku initially joined Chelsea in 2011, but failed to establish himself and was shipped out on loan to West Brom and Everton. He also had a two-year spell with Manchester United which were not very convincing.
It was at Inter where he established himself as a top striker as in his two-season stint, he scored an impressive 64 goals in 95 appearances, helping the Nerazzurri break an 11-year Serie A title drought.
Apology to Inter
Speaking on his former club, Lukaku apologized for the manner in which he moved to Chelsea and strongly hinted at a return.
"I want to say a big apology to the Inter fans because I think the way I left should have been different," he added in his Sky Sport Italia interview.
"I really hope in the depths of my heart to return to Inter, not at the end of my career, but at a still good level to hopefully win more."
Chelsea drop more points
Meanwhile, Tuchel recently said it would be “stupid” to have Chelsea in the title race conversation after the 1-1 draw against Brighton on Wednesday.
The draw dragged the Blues eight points behind leaders Manchester City and with the current injury problems, Tuchel is not feeling too optimistic.
"We have seven Covid cases, we have four or five key players out for six or more weeks," he said. "How should we compete in a title race?" the gaffer posed.
