The Hammers’ winner came from an unlikely source as Arthur Masuaku’s cross late in the game somehow found its way past Edouard Mendy, who generally had a miserable afternoon at the London Stadium.

Chelsea went into the game at the back of a 2-1 win over Watford, in a game which Tuchel acknowledged was pretty much a steal.

And they got off to a bright start as Thiago Silva broke the deadlock, heading Mason Mount’s corner past Lukasz Fabianski via the inside of the post.

Whether it is hangover of just lack of concentration, Chelsea orchestrated their own downfall as a poor back pass from Jorginho led to keeper Edouard Mendy tripping Jarod Bowen in the box after some pressure from the West Ham forward.

Manuel Lanzini smashed home the resulting penalty to restore parity and send the home crowd into a frenzy.

But Chelsea were ahead once again at the stroke of half time as Mount, who had been brilliant throughout the first half, hit a stunning side-foot volley from a Hakim Ziyech cross.

Jarod Bowen’s low drive, 11 minutes after the restart restored parity once again, but there was more drama to come towards the end of the game.

Three minutes from time, Masuaku got the ball down the left and after seeking options around him, he decided to fly in a cross which ended up being a shot that bizarrely wrong footed Mendy for the winner.
