  • Chelsea and Mason Mount are yet to find the middle ground as contract talks remain stalled
  • The 24-year old's current deal expires at the end of next season and he appears reluctant
  • Liverpool and Manchester United are among clubs interested in Mount, should he decide to leave

Mason Mount’s future at Chelsea is currently up in the air, as both club and player are unwilling to budge in their demands amid talks of a new contract.

The 24-year old’s first option is to stay at Stamford Bridge, but a deal does not look like it is forthcoming amid reports he wants a hefty wage to renew his contract.

The England international is reportedly on an £80,000-a-week deal but wants his new deal to triple his income to the region of £250,000-per-week, which would see him match up with colleagues like Reece James, who recently penned a five-year deal.

Should Mount leave Chelsea?

Mount emerged as a top midfielder under the reigns of Frank Lampard, when the former England star was manager of Chelsea.

Under the Blues legend, Mount got a considerable amount of game time, which helped him grow into a world-class player.

Things have not been as rosy in recent months however, especially under new Chelsea boss, Graham Potter.

With the club now under new ownership and with the new manager still trying to find a winning formula for his side, Mount is at a disadvantage since he no longer enjoys the favours he had, especially when Lampard was manager.

Furthermore, the fact that Chelsea have spent extensively to increase their squad depth could mean more competition for Mount for places in the starting XI.

All these factors combined beg the question of whether it would be wise for the midfielder to commit his future to Stamford Bridge.

Possible destinations for Mount

With Liverpool struggling this season and Klopp’s loyalty to his classic midfielders proving ineffective, a move for Mount to Anfield does not seem too far-fetched.

Since he is nearing the end of his current deal, he is likely to go for £30-50 mil, a price which is a bargain for a team like the Reds considering the longevity a 24-year-old can have if he avoids injuries.

With Liverpool’s classic three-man setup in the midfield, Mount could integrate seamlessly into the squad.

Mikel names ‘engine’ at Chelsea

Sports Brief also reported on John Obi Mikel’s pick for a player he considered an 'engine' during his Chelsea days.

According to the former Super Eagles captain, no one came close to Michael Essien’s work rate during their playing days.

Mikel believes the Ghanaian legend was not given enough credit, explaining how hard he worked on and off the ball.
