  • Chelsea fans have appeared to back Graham Potter's choice to go with Kepa Arrizabalaga as the club's first-choice goalkeeper
  • Kepa has usurped Edouard Mendy, with the Spanish tactician getting the nod in every game so far under Potter
  • The world's most expensive goalkeeper has played second fiddle since Mendy's arrival two years ago

Edouard Mendy is seemingly in a battle to reclaim his spot as Chelsea's number-one goalkeeper following the appointment of Graham Potter.

Last month, Chelsea signed Potter to replace Thomas Tuchel was sacked following a spate of poor results.

Mendy has become the first casualty of the regime change, with former number one Kepa Arrizabalaga getting the nod on all the games under Potter so far.

At the time of Potter's arrival, Mendy was nursing a shoulder injury he picked during a controversial London derby win over West Ham. Kepa was immediately thrust into action in Chelsea's stalemate against Salzburg in the Champions League.

Potter prefers a ball-playing goalkeeper

The Spanish custodian has been retained in subsequent matches against Crystal Palace, AC Milan and Wolves.

Reports had been rife that Kepa would be preferred over Mendy due to the former's ability to use his feet in building play. Despite being a decent shot-stopper, Mendy has often been under immense pressure when forced to play out of the back.

How fans have reacted to the goalkeeper development at Chelsea

@ChinedumEmeana tweeted:

"I expect Kepa to start again in Milan. And continue as the first choice. Let Mendy fight for it and show that he really wants it back by training hard and supporting Kepa as Kepa supported him."

@CFCNewsReport tweeted:

"Kepa under Graham Potter is amazing Mendy's got to work harder to displace him now."

@Blue_Footy said:

"Kepa has really improved his passing. That could give him a slight edge and keep him as number one over Mendy."

Mendy will be looking to get a few games under his belt, especially with a packed schedule coming up before the World Cup. He will still be expected to be Senegal's first-choice goalkeeper in Qatar, where they will face the Netherlands, Ecuador and the hosts in Group A.

Worrying signs for Senegal as key stars like Edouard Mendy lose form ahead of World Cup

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Mendy has only kept one clean sheet so far and has been on the receiving end of very questionable goalkeeping.

He gifted Brendan Aaronson a cheap goal away to Leeds before the Video Assistant referee saved his blushes against West Ham.

It also doesn't help the talk that Potter might prefer Kepa Arrizabalaga, who is better at using his feet than Mendy. Should Potter drop Mendy, it could further complicate his fitness ahead of Qatar.
