Thomas Tuchel: From Playing Players Out of Position to Poor Communication, Why Chelsea Boss Had to Go

  • Thomas Tuchel was informed of the club's decision to let him go in a face-to-face meeting by Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali on Wednesday morning
  • While his reign at Chelsea has been near-perfect, a lot of other factors might have contributed to his dismissal as coach after his first major dip in form since he took over from Frank Lampard
  • Pundits always questioned why he played offensive players out of position, with Callum Hudson-Odoi a big casualty

The Chelsea faithful worldwide and the football universe in general remains sharply divided following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel early on Wednesday morning, 7th September.

Tuchel has been sacked barely 15 months after leading the club to its second Champions League title, among other European trophies. Chelsea's recent dip in form despite spending colossal amounts of money appeared not to sit well with the Todd Boehly-owned club.

Tuchel's 100th game in charge, a 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League, was his last as the club announced it had parted ways with the German gaffer.

Why would Boehly sack a manager who had proven himself at a high level? Why would Tuchel be sacked before being given adequate time to work on his new signings?

Evening Standard reports that talks of a change began immediately after Chelsea lost heavily to Arsenal during a preseason game in the United States. The ownership is understood to have cast doubts about whether Tuchel was the right man to lead them into the future.

Petr Cech's and Marina Granovskaia's exits saw Boehly take charge of transfers with the help of Tuchel. It is understood that the manager was unwilling to commit to the business side of football as the club looked for a new sporting director.

Players questioned his tactics

Poor communication might have been another factor. Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic are all on record questioning Tuchel's tactics. The aforementioned two have already left the club.

Pulisic was among the many players who were played out of position by Tuchel. The American had to contend with playing as a wingback or on the right-hand side of the pitch despite his preferred position being on the left.

Callum Hudson-Odoi is believed to have been frustrated to the point that he opted to leave for Bayer Leverkusen on loan. At one point in Chelsea's opening game against Everton, Tuchel had Armando Broja(a number 9) playing on the left side as a winger, Raheem Sterling(a winger) playing as the striker, with Pulisic playing in his less preferred right side.

Tuchel's stoic backline was repeatedly breached this season

Tuchel's major undoing was the inability to turn his side into a free-scoring side. The Blues struggled to see off teams. Their major weapon was their stout defence which led them to the Champions League title, but this season, the defence had been breached in every game save for one.

He, however, leaves the club as one of the most successful coaches ever. Whether or not it was the right decision to let him go remains to be seen.

Top 5 managers who can take over from Thomas Tuchel

Sports Brief has also reported that Zinedine Zidane was leading the list of people to take over from Tuchel.

The former Real Madrid head coach has three Champions League titles under his belt. Paris Saint-Germain unsuccessfully tried to lure him earlier in the summer.

It is believed he is waiting to take over from Didier Deschamps as France's head coach.
