  • Didier Drogba was coming up against five other candidates who were eyeing Ivory Coast's prestigious FA presidency
  • However, Drogba fell short of enough support as he was eliminated in the third round after he managed a paltry 21 votes
  • Both Yacine Idriss Diallo and Sory Diabate beat the Premier League Hall of Famer in the round, with Diallo emerging the victor in the second round with 63 votes
  • The poll had been postponed several times since 2020 over issues of the eligibility of certain candidates including Drogba

Chelsea icon Didier Drogba has failed in his bid to become the president of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF).

Drogba had thrown his hat in the ring earlier in April as he sought to walk in the footsteps of Cameroonian football legend, Samuel Eto'o.

However, the legendary striker was not considered for the position as he lost in the Saturday, April 23, elections.

According to Goal, Drogba crashed out in the first round of the poll, finishing third behind Yacine Idriss Diallo and Sory Diabate.

The two-time African footballer of the year managed a paltry 21 votes, with Diallo, who won the second round garnering 59 votes.

Diallo wins second round of the vote

BBC reports Diallo, a businessman and current FIF executive member won the second round of the vote in the capital, Yamoussoukro.

Diallo is understood to have squeezed out Sory Diabate, former FIF vice-president, by just two votes as he garnered 63 votes against Diabate's 61.

The new FIF chief has a mandate of four years and will be in charge of the organisation of the 2023 African Cup of Nations, which Ivory Coast will be hosting.
