A Chelsea side reeling from five consecutive Premier League defeats without scoring a single goal will welcome Nottingham Forest to Stamford Bridge on Monday in a 3pm kickoff that carries significant implications at both ends of the table.

The scale of Chelsea’s domestic slump is historic by the club’s own standards. They have not lost six successive league matches since November 1993, and records show they have never strung together six consecutive league defeats without finding the net — a grim milestone that awaits if they fail to score on Monday. Interim head coach Calum McFarlane, however, has publicly maintained that morale within the squad remains intact despite the alarming run of results.

There were tangible signs of improvement in McFarlane’s second interim spell when Chelsea faced Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final last Sunday. Enzo Fernandez netted the only goal of the game at Wembley, booking the Blues a place in the FA Cup final against Manchester City. That result offers some encouragement ahead of Monday’s league assignment, where a top-six finish — and potentially a Champions League place — remains the target, albeit a narrowing one.

Nottingham Forest arrive in west London in markedly better shape. Vitor Pereira’s side demolished Sunderland 5-0 in their most recent outing, a result that moved them to 16th in the table, five points clear of Tottenham Hotspur in the final relegation spot. Forest have now scored three or more goals in three of their last four Premier League matches — against Sunderland (5-0), Burnley (4-1), and Tottenham Hotspur (3-0) — matching the total number of times they managed that feat across their previous 29 league games combined.

The head-to-head record between these two sides at this venue adds another layer of intrigue. While Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 win at the City Ground in the reverse fixture back in October — a result that contributed to Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal — Nottingham Forest have not lost a single league game at Stamford Bridge since returning to the top flight in 2022.

On the team news front, Chelsea received a welcome double boost with Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro both returning from muscular issues during the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. Reece James, who has been sidelined with a thigh problem, and Levi Colwill, recovering from an ACL injury, could also feature in the squad. Absentees include Filip Jorgensen (groin), Jamie Gittens (thigh), and Estevao Willian (thigh), while Mykhaylo Mudryk remains unavailable as he continues to contest a four-year doping ban.

Forest head into the match with a significantly stretched squad. Ola Aina limped off in the second half of Thursday’s fixture, though Pereira expressed cautious optimism over a swift return. The Forest manager was less hopeful regarding Dan Ndoye, Ibrahim Sangare, Jair Cunha (shoulder), and Murillo (thigh), while Nicolo Savona (knee), Callum Hudson-Odoi (thigh), John Victor (knee), and Willy Boly (knee) are all confirmed absentees.

Chelsea’s expected lineup: Sánchez; Gusto, Adarabioyo, Chalobah, Cucurella; Lavia, Caicedo; Palmer, Fernández, Neto; Pedro. Nottingham Forest’s expected lineup: Sels; Abbott, Milenkovic, Morato, Williams; McAtee, Anderson, Dominguez, Gibbs-White; Jesus, Lucca.

Monday’s fixture presents Chelsea with an opportunity to arrest their league freefall on home soil while simultaneously keeping their European ambitions alive. For Forest, a depleted travelling squad faces the challenge of extending their unbeaten record at Stamford Bridge against a home side with renewed purpose following their cup progress.
