Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has confirmed that Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman are among the first-team players he intends to deploy when the Super Eagles face Portugal and Poland in high-profile friendly matches this June.

Speaking on the upcoming fixtures, Chelle drew a clear distinction between the June friendlies and the 2026 Unity Cup in London, which precedes those games. “For the big warm-up games in June against Poland and Portugal, I will feature my first-team players,” Chelle stated. “These are games that can push up the global ranking if we win them.”

The Unity Cup, scheduled in London ahead of the June internationals, will serve a different purpose under Chelle’s planning. The Nigeria coach has indicated that the tournament will be used to evaluate players on the fringes of the squad rather than fielding established names. “The Unity Cup provides a platform to assess new players,” he previously stated, signalling a deliberate two-phase approach to the international window.

Osimhen and Lookman are two of Nigeria’s most prominent attacking options at club level. Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, has been one of the standout forwards in European football over recent seasons, while Lookman has been in exceptional form for Atalanta — most recently scoring to eliminate Barcelona from European competition. Both players’ club performances make them central figures in Chelle’s plans for competitive and high-stakes fixtures.

Portugal, one of Nigeria’s June opponents, are among Europe’s top-ranked nations and are led by Cristiano Ronaldo, now playing in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr but still active at international level. Facing such opposition carries significant implications for Nigeria’s FIFA world ranking, which is the direct motivation Chelle cited for fielding his strongest side in those games.

Poland, the other scheduled opponent, provides similarly competitive European opposition and presents another opportunity for Nigeria to test their first-choice lineup under pressure ahead of future qualifying campaigns.

Chelle, who took charge of the Super Eagles following the departure of José Peseiro, has been in the process of reshaping the squad and identifying depth across multiple positions. The dual-fixture strategy in June — using the Unity Cup for development and the European friendlies for performance — reflects a structured approach to squad management during what is a relatively open period in Nigeria’s international calendar.

The June window will be closely watched as an indicator of how Chelle intends to set up Nigeria tactically, particularly with Osimhen and Lookman operating in the same attacking unit. How the Super Eagles perform against Portugal and Poland is likely to inform selection decisions for subsequent competitive matches.
