Gylfi Sirgudsson scored the only goal from the penalty spot as Everton handed Chelsea a rare defeat in front of 2000 fans at Goodison Park.
Chelsea went into the game in superb form, sitting third in the standings and with the possibility of going top with a win.
Both sides lacked their key creative players, with the Toffees’ new boy James Rodriguez ruled out with injury while Chelsea were without Hakim Ziyech who has been instrumental for his side in their unbeaten run.
Having made a slow start, Chelsea found themselves behind in the 22nd minute after a rare error from keeper Edouard Mendy led to a penalty which Sirgudsson calmly slotted home.
The goal sparked the visitors to life but they lacked the cutting edge in front of goal and were thrarted on several occassions by a highly disciplined Everton side.
The Merseysiders were largely boosted by the small crowd who made their way to the stadium for the first time since the pandemic struck.
Chelsea defender Reece James had his side’s best chance on the night his goal-bound shot was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Jordan Pickford.
Mason Mount hit the woodwork late in the game but thanks to an extremely solid Everton defence on the night, the Blues could not find an equaliser.
The win provided some much needed relief for Everton, who won only once in seven games after initially winning their first four games of the campaign.
One sub plot was the fact that Ancelotti had to mastermind a win against his former player Frank Lampard, who was his talisman when the Italian was Chelsea manager for two seasons.
Everton climbed up to seventh after the win, displacing both Manchester sides who meandered to a dull stalemate in the derby in the earlier match, while Chelsea stay in third place but could be overtaken by the likes of Leicester City and Southampton.
The Toffees will hope to build on the win as they gear up to face Leicester City in another tough clash on December 16, while Chelsea have an away trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday.
