Wanyama, 28, only made four appearances for Spurs this season with his only start coming at a league cup loss to Colchester.

He, however, had his moments after signing for the London club in 2016, as he made 47 appearances in the impressive 16/17 season when Spurs finished second to unlikely champions Leicester City.

The towering midfielder shared a message of gratitude to the club which reached the Champions League final last season.

"I want to thank Tottenham fans for all the support over these past years,we have shared great times together from finishing 2nd in EPL to reaching the champions league finals,I will always be grateful for having be able to play for this club," he tweeted.

His career has been in limbo since the start of the season when he nearly signed for Belgian outfit Club Brugge Spurs in a potential KSh 1.7 billion (£13.6m) deal which failed to go through before deadline day.

Rumours were rife this week that Wanyama could return to the Scottish league, especially after it emerged he had acquired dual citizenship.

Notably, he is set to work with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry who is manager at Montreal Impact.

With the league just kicking off , Wanyama will be hoping to jump-start his career once again as he will have plenty of time to show his quality in midfield once again
