South Africa’s Fagrie Lakay Joins Egypt’s Pyramid FC, Cape Town City Sign Darwin Gonzalez as a Replacement

Cape Town City’s Fagrie Lakay is heading off to Egypt to play for Pyramid FC. The Egyptian club and Cape Town City finalised the deal on deadline day after a week of negotiations.

Fagrie will became the second South African in Egypt after Percy Tau joined Pitso Mosimane at Al Ahly. Pyramids FC is a title rival to Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly so Lakay will play against his fellow countrymen at some stage.

Agent Paul Mitchell told Soccer Laduma that the player was excited to be joining the Egyptian team.

"Fagrie is joining a great club, in a very competitive league, he is thrilled and excited to be taking this as the next step in his career.

"He is a gifted footballer and a mature young man who should have left SA before now, however, this is a great opportunity for him and for SSG, it’s pleasing for the agency to facilitate another SA footballer overseas, yet again."

Cape Town City FC took to their Twitter to confirm the deal that will see Lakay head off to Egypt but also to announce their new signing, Darwin Gonzalez from Venezuela.

Gonzalez, who plays as a forward, joins from Venezuelan Primera División side Deportivo La Guaira, where he scored 23 goals in 77 appearances.

In other transfer news, Ethiopian striking sensation, Abubeker Nassir, could soon become a Mamelodi Sundowns player after could concluding a trial at the Pretoria club, Sports Brief earlier reported.

The 21-year-old Ethiopian has been described as the golden boy of East African football and has won the Most Valuable Player and Best Young Player awards in the Ethiopian League, Goal.Com confirmed.

Abubeker Nassir was also part of the Ethiopian side that recently represented their country at AFCON 2021. Ethiopia finished at the bottom of their group with one point after drawing with Burkina Faso.
