Bruno Fernandes Reveals Wife’s Words Were Key to Staying at Manchester United Despite Al Hilal Offer

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has disclosed that a candid question from his wife played a decisive role in his decision to remain at Old Trafford, despite the club confirming it would not stand in his way had he chosen to leave for Saudi Pro-League side Al Hilal.

Speaking publicly on the matter, Fernandes quoted his wife directly: “The words of my wife were like, ‘Have you achieved your dreams? Have you achieved everything you wanted?’ That small thing she said made me understand that she’s on the same page as me. Let’s keep trying and see where this takes me.”

The Portuguese international had been heavily linked with a departure at the end of last season, with Al Hilal among the clubs pursuing his signature. Fernandes previously told the BBC that the financial scale of the offer caused him genuine “hurt” — an indication of how seriously he considered the move before ultimately consulting his family and choosing to stay.

“I stayed because I thought I still had something that I could give back to the club,” Fernandes explained. His reasoning also extended beyond personal ambition, with the 30-year-old citing loyalty during a difficult period in the club’s history. “I didn’t want to leave the club at the point where we were struggling,” he stated. “Staying this long at Man Utd isn’t for everyone.”

The decision appears to have been vindicated by his performances in the current campaign. Fernandes is now closing in on the Premier League all-time assists record and has emerged as a leading contender for the PFA Player of the Season award. His contributions have been central to United’s push for a top-four finish and a return to Champions League football next season.

His long-term contract situation, however, remains unresolved. With just one year remaining on his current deal, speculation over his future at the club is likely to intensify ahead of the summer transfer window. United will be keen to secure the captain’s services beyond the 2025-26 season, particularly given the role he has played in stabilising the squad during a turbulent transition period under new ownership and management.

Despite the uncertainty, Fernandes has been unequivocal about his personal targets. “I want to win the Premier League,” he declared. “I want to win the Champions League. I never hide from that.”

The midfielder’s situation draws a notable parallel to Wayne Rooney’s decision in 2010, when the then-England striker elected to stay at United amid significant interest from rival clubs across Europe — a choice that preceded multiple major trophy wins during his time at Old Trafford.

For Fernandes, whose trophy haul at United remains limited relative to his individual output, the pursuit of collective silverware appears to be the primary motivation keeping him at the club.
