Photos of Lamptey starting his career at Chelsea around that same time have since popped up on social media, the Sun reported.

The Brighton defender was 9 years old when Ghana suffered a heartbreaking quarter-final loss to the South Americans.

Lamptey played for England at youth level, but decided to switch nationality and represent the country of his parents in June 2022.

The former Chelsea player has played all two World Cup games for Ghana in Qatar.

"What a win, thank you for the amazing support. Now time to prepare for the next one!" he wrote after Ghana's win over South Korea.

Lamptey delighted with Ghana switch

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Brighton and Hove Albion defender Tariq Lamptey was proud to join Ghana for the nation's friendlies against Brazil and Nicaragua.

The former England youth international switched nationalities to represent the West African nation in June.

In his first interview with the Ghana Football Association media, Lamptey expressed delight after receiving a warm reception from his new international teammates.

Lamptey set for Ghana debut

Former England U21 defender Lamptey reacted to his nationality switch, ahead of his Black Stars debut earlier this year.

The Brighton and Hove Albion right-back was named in Ghana's squad for the pre-Mundial international friendlies.

In a video posted on social media, Lamptey expressed delight at switching nationalities to represent the West Africans.
