Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva has claimed a historic place in Premier League records after making his 297th appearance in England’s top flight — more than any Portuguese player in the competition’s history.
The milestone came during City’s commanding 3-0 win over Chelsea, a result that further demonstrated the club’s continued competitive edge. In reaching the landmark, Silva moved beyond the previous record held by Luis Boa Morte, and in doing so also surpassed two of Portugal’s most celebrated footballers: Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, both of whom have featured prominently in the Premier League across their respective careers.
Silva joined Manchester City in 2017, and in the nearly nine years since, he has rarely been absent from the starting lineup. That durability has translated into an extraordinary trophy haul. During his time at the Etihad Stadium, the midfielder has won six Premier League titles, five EFL Cups, two FA Cups, and the 2023 UEFA Champions League — the latter completing a historic treble for the club under manager Pep Guardiola. In total, Silva has accumulated 19 major honours with City.
Now club captain, Silva’s record appearance tally reflects more than longevity — it speaks to a consistency that has made him central to one of the most decorated eras in English football. Under Guardiola’s system, Silva has been valued for his tactical versatility, technical precision, and ability to sustain high performance levels across congested domestic and European schedules.
The record is particularly notable given the competition for the milestone. Ronaldo made 346 Premier League appearances across stints with Manchester United, accumulating 138 goals in the process, while Fernandes — currently United’s captain — has been a consistent presence in the league since joining in January 2020. That Silva has now eclipsed both in terms of appearances by a Portuguese player underscores just how embedded he has become in the Premier League landscape.
Luis Boa Morte, the former Southampton, Fulham, and West Ham midfielder, had long held the record after a Premier League career spanning the late 1990s through to the late 2000s. His benchmark stood for a considerable period before Silva’s appearance against Chelsea brought it to an end.
City’s 3-0 victory over Chelsea, in which Silva reached the record, continues a stretch of form that keeps the club involved in the race across multiple competitions. Silva, despite reported transfer interest in previous windows, remains an active and influential figure in Guardiola’s plans.
At 31 years old, Silva shows little sign of slowing down, and depending on how long he remains at City, the record he has set could prove difficult to match. For now, the Portuguese midfielder stands alone at the top of an appearance table that once featured some of the most recognised names his country has produced.
