Ghanaian football has been plunged into grief following the death of Berekum Chelsea winger Dominic Frimpong, who was killed on Sunday after armed men opened fire on the club’s team bus as it returned from a Ghana Premier League fixture against Samartex.

The attack took place along the Bibiani–Goaso highway, where, according to accounts from the club, masked gunmen blocked the road and forced the bus to stop before opening fire on the vehicle in what was described as a coordinated assault. The driver reportedly attempted to reverse away from danger, but the attackers continued shooting, compelling players and officials to abandon the bus and flee into surrounding bushes for safety.

Frimpong, 20, sustained a critical gunshot wound during the chaos. He was transported to a nearby medical facility in Bibiani, where medical staff worked to stabilise him. Despite those efforts, he was later pronounced dead, reportedly as a result of a gunshot wound to the head.

In an official statement, Berekum Chelsea recounted the harrowing details of the ambush, describing the moments in which players and staff were forced to seek refuge in the areas surrounding the highway. The club extended its gratitude to local residents, security personnel, and members of the media who responded swiftly and provided assistance in the immediate aftermath of the attack. Berekum Chelsea also acknowledged support received from fellow Ghanaian top-flight side Bibiani Gold Stars following the incident.

The Ghana Premier League, in which Berekum Chelsea compete, has not yet issued a formal public statement regarding the suspension or postponement of fixtures in the wake of the tragedy, though the incident is expected to prompt serious discussions around player safety and travel arrangements for clubs operating in the division.

Berekum Chelsea are one of Ghana’s most established football clubs, having won the Ghana Premier League title in the 2010–11 season and represented the country in the CAF Champions League. The club is based in the Bono Region of Ghana, and the Bibiani–Goaso road on which the attack occurred connects several communities in that region.

Frimpong’s death marks one of the most devastating incidents in recent Ghanaian football history and has drawn an outpouring of condolences from across the continent’s football community. The circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether any suspects have been apprehended, had not been officially confirmed at the time of publication.
