Thomas Muller has taken a cheeky dig at Lionel Messi after Bayern Munich eliminated Paris Saint-Germain from the Champions League, admitting that Cristiano Ronaldo has always been a threat to the German giants.

Muller captained Bayern to beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League encounter at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

The Bavarians, who won the first leg 1-0 in Paris three weeks ago, advanced to the quarter finals with a remarkable 3-0 aggregate victory.

The dribbling magician once again cut a frustrating figure in Europe's premier competition in both legs against the Bundesliga powerhouse.

Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann countervailed the World Cup winner to perfection, making it difficult for the 35-year-old playmaker to create chances and link up regularly with teammates.

In his post-match presser, Muller appeared to mock Messi's unproductive display, admitting that Bayern always struggled against Ronaldo during his time with Real Madrid.

"Against Messi, things always go well at all levels in terms of results," Muller told Kicker journalist Georg Holzner, via @iMiaSanMia.
"At club level, Cristiano Ronaldo was our problem when he was at Real Madrid. But I have the greatest respect for Messi's World Cup performance"

Ronaldo has fared better anytime crosses swords against Bayern. The Al-Nassr forward has notched nine in over eight outings against the Bundesliga champions, including one hattrick and three braces.

Meanwhile, Messi has bagged four goals in nine games against Bayern Munich. He has only won twice, with one game ending in a draw and suffered six defeats against the Germans, including the famous 8-2 loss.

Muller also upstaged Messi on the international stage when Germany pipped Argentina 1-0 to win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Fans troll Messi

Earlier Sports Brief reported that Lionel Messi has come under intense backlash following Paris Saint-Germain's exit from the Champions League knockout phase.

The Parisians suffered back-to-back round-of-16 elimination from Europe's premier club competition after suffering a 3-0 aggregate defeat against Bayern Munich.

Having found his rhythm since the World Cup break, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner was expected to inspire PSG to Champions League success just as he did with his native Argentina.
