  • Fans of Bayern Munich started chanting 'Messi' at Camp Nou, after supporters of Barcelona had earlier taunted them by cheering for Robert Lewandowski
  • Goals from Sadio Mane, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Benjamin Pavard ensured Barca exited the competition with their tails between their legs
  • The three-nil defeat at the hands of Bayern ensured the Catalan giants dropped to the Europa League for the second season running under manager Xavi Hernandez

Footage has emerged of Bayern Munich fans chanting Lionel Messi's name, during their side's UEFA Champions League clash against FC Barcelona on Wednesday night.

The titanic clash between two of Europe's powerhouse clubs lost its value following Inter Milan's landslide victory over Viktoria Plzen, which ensured Barcelona suffered back-to-back Champions League exit.

Poised to leave a positive impression on the home supporters who had thronged to Spotify Camp Nou, Barcelona took to the field searching for pride.

While the game ensued, supporters of Barcelona sought to taunt their visitors by cheering for Robert Lewandowski, who swapped Bayern for the five-time European champions this summer.

In a quick rebuttal, supporters from the visiting club responded by chanting for Lionel Messi, a legend of the Blaugrana, as Bayern fans added insult to Barcelona's injuries as captured by social media user Robin.

Barcelona bow out of Champions League

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Bayern Munich clinched the top spot in the Champions League Group C with a 3-0 win over eliminated Barcelona, after the Catalans' fate had been decided before kick-off at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Inter Milan thrashed Viktoria Plzen 4-0 earlier on to guarantee progression to the last 16, and to send Barca crashing out in the first round for a second successive season.

The Catalans, who now drop into the Europa League, had reached the knock-out rounds of the competition in the 17 prior editions, before enduring consecutive early eliminations under coach Xavi Hernandez.
