Former Bayern Munich playmaker Franck Ribery has stated that he and former teammate Arjen Robben were better than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at some point.

To date, the Frenchman believes he was robbed of the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2013 as CR7 scooped the award that year.

Having dominated world football for more than a decade, Messi has been handed the Ballon d’Or award seven times, while his Portuguese counterpart has five.

Ribery faulted how the award was handed to Ronaldo in 2013 claiming politics was involved as he went on to say the world’s football governing body wanted the striker to win it.

And now, Ribery who formed a deadly attacking partnership with Arjen Robben at Bayern Munich says the pair were at some point better than Messi and Ronaldo.

Ribery said via Tribuna:

"Personally, I think that myself and Robben at some point were better than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. But they played in El Clasico, so that worked to their advantage as the audience watched them more."

Thomas Muller faults French Football over Messi’s 2021 Ballon d’Or

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller has lamented over French Football’s decision to award Lionel Messi the 2021 Ballon d’Or on November 29.

The German striker was not impressed after his club teammate Robert Lewandowski was ignored and the prestigious prize handed to former Barcelona captain Messi.

Messi extended his Ballon d’Or awards to seven and Muller blasted journalists who voted for the winner of the prestigious prize.

Xavi rates Messi above Ronaldo

Sports Brief earlier reported that Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has stated emphatically that Lionel Messi has an edge over his fierce rival Cristiano Ronaldo as both players continue to generate debates.

Xavi had no hesitation in choosing his former teammate Messi who remains the only man to have won the coveted Ballon d’Or seven times.

Both Messi and Ronaldo have dominated world football for over a decade as they have smashed quite a number of records, with many claiming they are the best footballers of their generation.
