FootballTension in Germany As Top Bundesliga Club Plan Urgent Meeting With Striker Over New Contract
- Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn says the Bundesliga club will be foolish to allow Robert Lewandowski to leave the German champions at the end of the season
- Robert Lewandowski's representatives will sit down with Bayern Munich to discuss the striker's future in the next few weeks with just one year remaining on his present contract
- Lewandowski has attracted interest from Europe’s top clubs with Spanish giants, Barcelona thought to be seriously interested in the Poland captain
Bayern Munich say they want Robert Lewandowski to stay at least an extra season in the Bundesliga as they try to convince the Poland international to sign a new contract.
Bavarian legend and former captain, Oliver Khan is very optimistic the Bundesliga champions can convince the 33-year-old to remain at the Allianz Arena.
According to a report via Sky Sports, Khan disclosed it will be a foolish move on the part of Bayern Munich to allow Lewandowski to leave for another team due to his importance to the Bavarians.
"We would be stupid to sell a player who scores 30 to 40 goals per season. We are and will be in talks about his future in the next weeks.
"He has a contract till June 2023 and we'll definitely have him with us for another season."
In eight seasons with Bayern Munich, Lewandowski has scored 341 goals in 370 games, second only to Gerd Muller on the club's all-time scoring chart.
Lewandowski equals Cristiano Ronaldo's Champions League record
Meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski made history in Bayern Munich’s Champions League quarter-final second-leg fixture against Villareal.
According to Manchester Evening News, Lewandowski opened the scoring to give the Bavarians a 1-0 lead but it was not enough to take Bayern Munich to the semi-finals following a late equalizer from Villareal.
The Poland international now joins Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the only players to have crossed the 30-goal mark in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
