Bayern Munich will face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after defeating Real Madrid 4-3 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate in a remarkable quarter-final second leg at the Allianz Arena on 15 April 2026.

The tie had appeared finely poised heading into the contest, with Álvaro Arbeloa’s Madrid side holding a 2-1 advantage from the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu. What unfolded across 90-plus minutes, however, produced one of the most chaotic and compelling European nights in recent memory.

The match began in stunning fashion just 45 seconds after kickoff, when Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer stepped out of his penalty area and played a loose pass directly to Arda Güler. The Turkish midfielder needed no second invitation, dispatching a 35-yard strike into an empty net to immediately overturn Bayern’s aggregate lead and silence the home crowd.

Bayern responded with purpose. In the sixth minute, Aleksandar Pavlović headed home a Joshua Kimmich corner from close range after Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin failed to deal with the delivery, restoring parity at 1-1 on the night. The breathless tempo showed no sign of easing, and Güler struck again in the 29th minute, this time bending a free-kick past Neuer to make it 2-1 to Madrid on the night and level the aggregate tie at 3-3.

Harry Kane then delivered a moment of his own, converting to register his 50th goal of the season across all competitions and level the score at 2-2. Before the interval, Kylian Mbappé finished clinically to hand Real Madrid a 3-2 lead at the break, setting the stage for an equally dramatic second period.

Eduardo Camavinga’s red card proved to be a pivotal moment in the tie, reducing Madrid to ten men and shifting momentum decisively toward the hosts. With Madrid forced to commit men forward, Bayern exploited the space on the counter-attack. Luis Diaz and Michael Olise both struck in stoppage time — Olise wrapping up the victory by shifting onto his left foot and beating Lunin emphatically — to complete a 4-3 win on the night and send Bayern through.

The drama extended beyond the final whistle. Several Real Madrid players reportedly confronted the match referee in the tunnel over Camavinga’s dismissal, while two-goal scorer Arda Güler was also shown a red card amid the post-match disorder.

The result sets up a Champions League semi-final between Bayern Munich and defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, with a place in the final at stake. PSG claimed their first European title last season, and the prospect of a meeting with Bayern — historically one of the continent’s most decorated clubs — represents one of the most anticipated semi-final pairings in recent years.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, exit at the quarter-final stage having won the competition in three of the previous five seasons. Their elimination, combined with the chaotic scenes that followed the final whistle, will prompt significant reflection for Arbeloa’s squad ahead of the summer.
