  • Former Barcelona and Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o has been accused of dribbling past the Spanish taxman
  • The current president of the Cameroon Football Association, who played at Barca from 2004 to 2009, is accused of owing over R17 million in taxes
  • Eto'o had already been in the dock for evading nearly R70 million in tax payments in relation to his time at the club between 2004 and 2007

Spain's tax authorities continue to crack down on current and former football players who are tardy with their payments, or don't make them at all.

This time, legendary former Barcelona and Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o has found himself in the crosshairs of the taxman. A report in the AFP stated that he owed €981,598.19 (R17.4 million) to the Spanish tax office.

Eto'o, who was voted in as the Cameroonian Football Association's president earlier this year, was one of the individuals and organisations who appeared on a 7 200-name list alleging that they owed €600,000 (R10.7 million) in taxes. He was yet to comment on the revelations.

He had already been accused of conspiring to evade €3.9 million (R69.2 million) in taxes owed on income from his image rights when he played for FC Barcelona from 2004 to 2009.

Big name football personalities have come under increased scrutiny for their dodgy tax dealings in the kingdom, from evasion to avoidance.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique Neymar Jr, James Rodriques and Jose Mourinho are among the heavyweights who have been accused of hot-footing past the tax authorities in recent times.

Duanne Olivier’s absence from Protea side against India put down to injury

Duanne Olivier's absence from the Protea side in the first test against Indian has had many people scratching their heads.

Olivier's omission was noticeable as South Africa's bowlers struggled to make inroads against a strong Indian side.

As reported on Sports Brief, Olivier was not selected as he was recovering from Covid19. Concerns over a slight hamstring strain also kept him out of the Protea side to face India at Centurion.
