- Lionel Messi has missed his first opportunity to win a trophy with Barcelona this season
- La Blaugrana were stunned by Athletic Bilbao 3-2 in the Supercopa final after extra time
- The 33-year-old was sent off for an off the ball incident with a Bilbao player
Lionel Messi was shown a red card in Barcelona 3-2 loss to Athletic Bilbao in the Supercopa final played in Sevilla.
Messi was involved in an off-the-ball incident with Asier Villalibre and after the referee checked the VAR, the Barca captain was given his marching orders.
It is only the third time in his career Messi has been sent off and the first time for Barcelona.
The other two have come while on international duty with Argentina where he got one in a friendly against Hungary in 2005 and in a Copa America with Chile in 2019.
Antoine Griezmann had put La Blaugrana ahead five minutes before half time in the keenly contested fixture.
But Oscar de Marcos drew Bibao leveling the 42nd minute as both teams went into the break with a 1-1 scoreline.
Raul Garcia then had his goal ruled out in the 57th minute but there was an offside spotted by the VAR.
Then Griezmann made it 2-1 from a Jordi Alba's assist in the 77th and right on the stroke of the final whistle Villabre scored to send the match into extra time.
Inaki Williams got the all-important winner in the third minute of extra time before Messi was shown a red card in the last minute of the game.
Athletic Bilbao won their first trophy since 2015 with a spirited performance against Ronald Koeman's men.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Lionel Messi wants to finish career at Barcelona if Xavi Hernandez would help convince his former teammate, presidential candidate Victor Font believes, Goal.
Fonta is hoping his proposal could prevent Joan Laporta for returning to office as the club's chief administrator on January 24, 2020.
The winner of the election will have to focus on La Blaugrana's captain Lionel Messi who is yet to commit to a new contract at Camp Nou.
