The son of Brazil's legendary Ronaldinho, Joao Mendes de Asis Moreira, has joined Spanish giants and former club of his father, Barcelona.

The 17-year-old inked a deal to join the Catalans U19 team as he begins his football career outside of Brazil.

Joao Mendes took to social media to share his excitement after sealing a move to Europe.

“I’m very happy and grateful for this big opportunity — visca Barça!," Joao Mendes posted on social media.

Before moving to Spain, Joao Mendes played for Brazilian outfit Cruzeiro.

Meanwhile, his father, Ronaldinho enjoyed his best days in football playing for the Catalans.

The 2002 World Cup winner won multiple La Liga titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2006 with Barcelona.

After five successful years at Barcelona, where he made 145 appearances, scoring 70 goals, he left to join AC Milan in 2008.

Ronaldinho was two-time Ballon d'or winner and was also twice FIFA best player.

His son Joao Moreira is also an attacking midfielder and will be expected to reach the heights of his father.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Brazilian legend, Ronaldinho has congratulated Los Angeles Lakers superstar, LeBron James after breaking and setting a new NBA scoring record.

The four-time NBA champion surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the all-time scorers chart after 36 points in the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on February 7.

Joao Mendes de Assis Moreira, who is the son of legendary Brazilian footballer, Ronaldinho has joined Spanish giants, Barcelona after coming out in flying colours while on trial at Camp Nou.

The 17-year-old travelled from Brazil to the Catalan club in January, and it would seem he impressed the coaching staff during his assessment.

However, Mendes will be starting his career at Barcelona from the academy level and will need to prove himself before he is promoted to the first team.
