Lionel Messi's brother, Matias has sensationally claimed Barcelona owes its significance to the Paris Saint-Germain superstar.

Messi spent almost two decades of his senior career at Barca, helping La Blaugrana win a staggering 35 trophies, including four Champions League titles.

Unfortunately, Barcelona's messy financial crisis ended their beautiful union with the Argentine captain, prompting his move to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021 as a free agent.

While there have been rumours that the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner was considering a return to Spain, his brother insists it will not happen, per the Sun.

Matias added that in the event that the current PSG star and his family did return, they would campaign for the immediate exit of Barcelona president, Joan Laporta.

Aside from his swipe at Laporta, Matias further claimed his brother had made Barcelona relevant in the modern era.

"For me, Barcelona became known thanks to Messi. Nobody knew about them before," Matias said in a live Twitch stream, as quoted by ESPNFC.

Messi's potential return to Barcelona has been thrust into the spotlight again thanks to his brother.

Matias Messi delivered an explosive interview recently, in which he claimed that his brother wouldn't return to the Spanish side anytime soon.

He recently discussed the matter in a live Twitch stream, claiming there needed to be a major shakeup at the club before his brother even considered a return.

Messi to Barcelona still on?

Barcelona has stepped up pursuits of Messi, after meeting with the Paris Saint-Germain forward’s representatives this week in Spain, Sports Brief also reported.

The Catalans are looking to re-sign the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who left Camp Nou after 17 years to sign for PSG after his contract was not renewed.

A meeting between both parties reportedly occurred at a restaurant in the Gracia neighbourhood in Barcelona, with three attendees present.
