Lionel Messi and Barcelona have a history together and it is no surprise the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner still has a soft spot for the Catalan city.

Messi has been heavily linked with a return to Camp Nou as Barcelona president, Joan Laporta has publicly revealed his intentions to re-sign the Argentina icon who is into the final six months of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

According to Sportskeeda, Messi has now revealed he will be returning to Barcelona, but only after he retires from international football.

Having come through the ranks of the prestigious La Masia academy, Messi spent 17 years of his illustrious career, from 2004 to 2021 at the La Liga giants.

Messi won four UEFA Champions League titles with Barcelona and holds the record as the club’s all-time goal scorer having netted 474 goals in 520 appearances for the Catalan giants.

Messi not ruling out 2026 World Cup appearance

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi continues to hint at prolonging his international career with Argentina through to the 2026 World Cup finals, Goal reports.

Messi in his words completed football after he helped Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, winning the only trophy missing from his cabinet.

The 35-year-old has now hinted that he might prolong his career up until the 2026 World Cup with manager Lionel Scaloni previously revealing he would love Messi to be part of the team.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Paris Saint-Germain superstar Lionel Messi admitted he has "achieved everything" in football after inspiring Argentina to World Cup success.
