  • Barcelona are in talks to sign Real Madrid's sidelined midfielder Marco Asensio
  • He is set to be out of a contract with the La Liga champions at this season's end
  • Asensio could join a long list of superstars to have played for both La Liga giants

Spanish giants, Barcelona are reportedly set to sign Marco Asensio from bitter rivals, Real Madrid.

Asensio has seen his game time reduced drastically at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium this season - owing to several injuries and a loss of form - which has prompted the 26-year-old to consider leaving the club.

Los Blancos are believed to be unwilling to renew the contract of the Spaniard and would allow him leave the club when his contract expires in the summer of 2023.

The media outlet further claims the left-footed attacker is not satisfied with the reduced terms offered by Carlo Ancelotti's side and is being allowed to negotiate with other clubs.

Real Madrid and Barcelona transfers

Very few players dare to cross the divide between Spanish football’s two giants.

One example is the reception Luis Figo received at Camp Nou in 2000, following his controversial move from Barcelona to Real Madrid, as per Daily Star.

Should Asensio decide to put pen to paper for the Catalans, it would be the first time a senior player has left Madrid for Barca since Luis Enrique in 1996.

Wage demands scupper transfer deals

Asensio's wage demands were a big reason why no clubs made a move for the player in the summer transfer window, and why Madrid have yet to tie him down to a new deal.

As noted by Transfermarkt, Asensio has made 11 appearances for Los Blancos this season - all of those appearances were as a substitute.

He has scored two goals and notched one assist, but has impressed in recent accounts against Elche and Sevilla.

Barca stars unhappy with Asensio?

Barcelona’s imminent desire to sign Spanish winger, Asensio from Real Madrid is facing a stumbling block, following a major uproar in the Catalans' dressing room.

Asensio will depart Real Madrid next summer, as the winger is currently unhappy at Santiago Bernabeu, Sports Brief has reported.

Barcelona looks a likely destination for the 26-year-old, although it is now believed senior players at Camp Nou are not in support of the move.
