The Dutch international was linked with a few clubs this transfer window, with Manchester United, Arsenal and Inter Milan all showing interest at one stage, The Sun reported.

Atletico then entered the race for the player as they looked to bring in a replacement for Joao Felix who joined Chelsea on loan.

Barca and Atleti at first disagreed on a suitable offer, as the Blaugrana either wanted a swap deal for Depay or a fee to their liking.

With the contract situation stalling at one stage, Xavi even promised to speak to Depay to find out whether he wanted to leave the club during the current transfer window, Goal reported.

Depay has only played 42 games for the Blaugrana, scoring 14 goals and notching up two assists, Transfermarkt reported.

He was signed during the time Ronald Koeman was in charge of the team, but wasn't seen as an important member of the squad once Xavi took over.

Depay open to joining Atletico

Earlier Sports Brief reported that Netherlands winger, Memphis Depay ws on the verge of leaving Barcelona in the January transfer window to join La Liga rivals, Atletico Madrid.

Atletico are desperate to sign a winger to replace Joao Felix, who joined Chelsea on a six-month loan deal, and has identified Depay as the perfect candidate.

Depay is open to joining La Rojiblancos this January on a six-month loan deal, with his contract with Barcelona set to expire in the summer.

Xavi fed up with Depay

Barcelona manager Xavi is already growing tired of Memphis Depay after the Netherlands winger's poor display in the Copa del Rey win against Intercity.

Depay was substituted against the Spanish third-tier side after he failed to make any meaningful impact in his first start for Barcelona after the World Cup.

Xavi has been fed up with Depay's demand for more playing time without proving that he deserves it whenever he is called upon, Sports Brief reported.
