Xavi Hernandez laid his hands on his maiden trophy as manager of Barcelona following his side's convincing win over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup.

Xavi, who took over the reins as Barcelona boss in 2021, masterminded an emphatic 3-1 win against archerivals Real Madrid on Sunday evening.

The 42-year-old's first trophy was inspired by one of his young soldiers in the shape of Gavi, who was adjudged the man-of-the-match for his excellent performance.

Barca beats Madrid to win Super Cup

Barcelona convincingly beat Real Madrid 3-1 in Saudi Arabia on Sunday to win the Spanish Super Cup, their first trophy since coach Xavi Hernandez took over.

Inspired by teenager Gavi, who scored himself and set up goals for Robert Lewandowski and Pedri Gonzalez, the Catalans produced one of their best performances in years against their bitter Clasico rivals.

Having enjoyed great success as a player at Barca, Xavi returned in November 2021 and after a summer of heavy spending, this emphatic victory is a sign his project is moving in the right direction.

Gavi shines in Super Cup win

Sports Brief earlier reported that Barcelona youngster Gavi put up a spectacular performance as his side crashed archrivals Real Madrid 3-1 to clinch the Spanish Super Cup.

Gavi scored and provided two assists as the Catalan giants exacted revenge for their defeat against the same opposition last season.

The 18-year-old drew first blood for Barcelona in an enthralling encounter three minutes after the half-hour mark.
