  • Robert Lewandowski was apparently rejected by Real Madrid before Barcelona's transfer
  • The striker scored an astonishing 50 goals in 43 appearances for Bayern Munich
  • He has already shown his goalscoring prowess since joining Barça this season, with 13 league goals

Poland international Robert Lewandowski reportedly offered himself to Real Madrid before joining Barcelona at the end of last season, it has been revealed.

The 34-year-old has been in great form since signing for the Blaugrana from Bayern Munich last summer.

The Pole has bagged 13 league goals in La Liga, helping the Catalan giants to sit three points clear of Real Madrid on top of the Spanish Primera Division.

According to Relevo, noted by Football Espana, it could have all been so different as Lewandowski preferred to join Real Madrid.

The report further states that Carlo Ancelotti's side was his first option when the forward decided to leave Bayern in the summer of 2021.

However, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez rejected the move due to the player’s age and the form of Karim Benzema.

That meant that Lewandowski stayed at Bayern for one more year, before making the move to Barcelona. Had Perez not turned down a deal, the Pole could have been wearing the white shirt of Real Madrid for Sunday evening’s game.

Lewandowski takes on former agent

As reported by USA Today at the time, Lewandowski's former agent was allegedly trying to blackmail the player.

The striker was represented by Cezary Kucharski until 2018, before he moved to Pini Zahavi. News then surfaced that Kucharski was trying to blackmail the now-Barcelona star.

Kucharski publicly accused Lewandowski and his wife of tax irregularities in Germany, threatening to reveal the details if they didn't pay him money, the publication noted.

Lewandowski denied the accusations and took action.

The former Bayern Munich star resorted to taking the legal route against his former agent, with Kucharski detained in 2020 over the blackmail charges.

Barcelona unhappy with Lewandowski's ban

Barcelona are reportedly aggrieved with the La Liga hierarchy, following the decision to reject the appeal from the Catalan club regarding the three-match ban imposed on Lewandowski.

The 34-year-old got into trouble with the league body and was suspended for three games, over gestures made towards referee Jesus Gil Manzano after being sent off against Osasuna.

Sports Brief reported that Barcelona are now accusing La Liga of 'playing politics' after attempts to overturn the ban failed.
