Barcelona faces another financial burden after the Catalan club was reportedly ordered to compensate former player, Matheus Fernandes.

The La Liga club is said to have terminated the contract of the Brazilian midfielder in 2021, after he only made one appearance since joining in 2020.

According to Sportskeeda and Forbes, Barcelona has now been ordered to pay Fernandes a whopping €8.5-million as compensation for alleged wrongful termination of his five-year contract.

Spain’s justice system has found the ordeal meted out on the 24-year-old to be unfair, and has deemed the payment an acceptable penalty for the 'unjust treatment of the Brazilian midfielder'.

Fernandes had earlier stated that the termination of his contract by Barcelona came as a shock, adding the club did not show him the courtesy of breaking the news over a phone call.

Fernandes joins Bragantino on loan

Meanwhile, Red Bull Bragantino announced that it has reached an agreement with Palmeiras for the loan signing of Fernandes until the end of December, Be Soccer reports.

In the past season with Athletico Paranaense, Fernandes made 27 appearances for the Brazilian outfit, with 15 of them as a starter for the club.

Following the abrupt end of his Barcelona career, the 24-year-old midfielder returned to Palmeiras as a free agent. His current deal with the Brazilian club ends in December 2023.

La Liga fines Barcelona €800,000

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Barcelona’s financial troubles proving costly. The Spanish side have found it difficult to stay clear of La Liga’s strict Financial Fair Play rules in recent years.

The club have struggled to operate efficiently while staying profitable, and will now face further financial punishment for breaching the league's rules.

La Liga have imposed an €800,000 fine on La Blaugrana for breaching the FFP regulations three times during the previous season.
