  • Xavi Hernandez has thrown light on how he was presented with the rarest of opportunities to join the Brazil coaching staff
  • The 42-year-old ended up taking over as Barcelona coach, his dream job, in November 2021, replacing Ronald Koeman
  • Despite dropping out of the UEFA Champions League, Xavi's Barcelona have been inch-perfect in La Liga, with his side lying at the summit of the league table before the World Cup break

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has opened up about rejecting the chance to join the Brazil coaching staff in order to wait for his 'dream job'.

Xavi was approached by the Brazil Football Association (CBF) to join coach Tite's backroom staff in 2021, however, the former Barcelona and Spain midfielder declined the opportunity.

The 42-year-old wanted a head coach role and opted to wait for his turn at Barcelona instead.

"It was a totally unexpected opportunity. I spoke with them through my agent, I had the opportunity to join Tite's staff and work with them but I wanted to be the head coach, wait for my opportunity to be at Barcelona," he told GOAL.

Currently handling Barcelona, Xavi believes he made the right choice by declining the offer to join coach Tite's staff, as noted by Barca News.

"I am where I want to be, in my opinion at the best club in the world, and it is in my heart. I'm there enjoying myself and trying to turn around the situation in Barcelona but he did have a chance and I did talk to them.
"It was unexpected, historic I would say, but I turned it down because I wanted to be the head coach."

Meanwhile, Brazil began their bid to win a record-extending sixth World Cup title in sensational style, beating Serbia in their opening group game.

Ronaldo wants European to coach Brazil

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima wants either Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola or Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti to take over as head coach of Brazil in the near future.

Ronaldo has admitted he would be delighted to see a top-class coach in the mould of Guardiola or Ancelotti take charge of the national team.

Brazil, currently handled by long-serving coach Tite, have never been coached by a non-Brazilian in the history of the country. However, the legendary striker wants a paradigm shift.
