  • The Catalan giants suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich in their dead-rubber Group C clash

Fans of FC Barcelona at Spotify Camp Nou chanted for ex-captain Lionel Messi as they watched their side suffer a second successive exit from UEFA Champions League group stage on Wednesday evening.

The Blaugrana were crashed out of Europe's top-tier club competition at the first hurdle again after a disappointing campaign, which produced just one win in five outings.

The five-time Champions League winners had already been relegated to the Europa League prior to kick-off after Inter Milan demolished Viktoria Plzen in the group's other game on the same day.

Messi signed for Paris Saint-Germain last season from Barcelona on a two-year contract as a free agent.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner is enjoying a resurgent season with the Parisians this term and appears to be back to his very best, scoring 11 goals and assisting 12 times this season.

His exit from Catalonia last year coincided with Barcelona enduring a trophyless season, failing to win the Copa del Rey and finishing a distant second to Real Madrid in La Liga.

Barcelona in Europa League

Last season, Xavi's side failed to progress to the last 16 of the Champions League and were consigned to the Europa League.

The LaLiga giants defeated Italian side Napoli in the Round of 32 stage of the Europa League before eliminating Galatasaray in the Round of 16.

However, the Camp Nou outfit exited the competition in the quarter finals thanks to Eintracht Frankfurt, who went on to win the competition.

Barcelona fans cheer on team

Meanwhile, a section of dyed-in-the-wool followers of FC Barcelona stayed behind to cheer the team on despite suffering an early Champions League exit.

Goals from Sadio Mane, Choupo-Moting and Benjamin Pavard ensured Barca exited the competition with their tails in between their legs.

Despite the humiliating nature of their elimination, some followers of the club stayed behind to applaud the efforts of Xavi's charges as shown in a video posted on Twitter, spotted by Sports Brief.

Fans slam Barca's woeful defence

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that social media users ripped into Barcelona defenders after they conceded two first-half goals against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Barcelona started with a back four of Hector Bellerin and Alejandro Balde playing on the flanks and Marcos Alonso pairing with Jules Kounde at the heart of defence.

Immeadiately after the condeded two goals from Sadio Mane and Choupo-Moting, fans took to social media to criticise their backline.
