  • Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique were roundly booed by their own fans at Camp Nou during their La Liga match against Villarreal
  • The duo have been criticised by Barcelona fans in recent weeks following their poor performance this season
  • Barcelona returned to winnings after beating Villarreal 3-0 thanks to a brace by Robert Lewandowski

Barcelona fans singled out Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique during their La Liga clash against Villarreal on Thursday night.

The veteran duo, who have been criticised by a section of the fans earlier this season, started the match from the bench as they cruised past the Yellow Submarines to a 3-0 triumph.

However, they were subject to a chorus of loud boos from inside Camp Nou immediately after they were subbed on against Unai Emery's side.

The home fans also targeted the Spanish internationals when their names were read out, as the starting line-up was announced before the game.

Per Spanish media outlet Sport, the angry fans were not happy with the performance of Busquets or Pique in their recent setbacks against Inter Milan and Real Madrid respectively.

Busquets was slammed following his abysmal display in Barcelona's 3-1 defeat to their bitterest rivals in El Clasico on Sunday, while Pique became the subject of many memes after he gifted Inter Milan an equaliser in their 3-3 stalemate.

How Barcelona defeated Villarreal

Robert Lewandowski was on the scoresheet twice, as Xavi Hernandez and his men flexed their muscles to thrash the visitors and stay three points behind Real Madrid.

The Poland international extended his domestic tally to 11 goals and his brace, along with Ansu Fati's strike, came in an eight-minute blitz near the end of the first half.

Villarreal had let in three goals in their first nine games, then three more goals in an eight-minute spell at Camp Nou, as Barcelona offered a riposte to their critics.

Barcelona could offload Pique, Busquets

Sports Brief earlier reported that Barcelona are eager to bring back Lionel Messi to Camp Nou, two years after the Argentine maestro left the Catalan giants for Paris Saint-Germain.

The La Liga club have now devised a master plan to re-sign Messi, that involves cutting their wage bill by a further £150million through player sales.

According to Sports Mole, Barcelona's Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are just a few of the high-profile players that might go as a result of the cost-cutting plan.
