  • Poland striker Robert Lewandowski had an afternoon to forget in his first El Clasico as Barcelona stumbled to their first loss of the season to Real Madrid
  • The ex-Bayern Munich striker had a fair chance to draw Barcelona level in the first half but scuffed the open goal opportunity
  • Lewandowski's rare and uncharacteristic miss ultimately proved costly as the Blaugrana stumbled to a 3-1 defeat

Robert Lewandowski had an underwhelming performance in his first-ever El Clasico since joining Barcelona in the summer.

Lewandowski, who has taken to life in La Liga like fish to water, was on the losing side as Real Madrid edged their bitterest rivals in the first instalment of the Clasico.

First-half strikes from Karim Benzema and Fede Valverde put daylight between the two sides but Torres halved the deficit only for Brazilian youngster Rodrygo to dent Barca's revival hopes with a late penalty.

The 34-year-old was presented with a golden chance when the score was 1-0 in favour of Real Madrid however, Lewy managed to miss from close range.

Lewandowski, who bagged a brace for the Catalan giants in midweek against Inter Milan, latched onto an accurate pass inside the box and immediately unleashed a shot towards the goal.

Unfortunately for the former Bayern Munich goal poacher, who is usually clinical in such positions, scuffled his effort as his effort went high over the crossbar in the 24th minute.

It proved to be a costly missed opportunity as Madrid rode on to secure the win and the bragging rights over Lewandowski's Barcelona, Daily Mail reports.

Lewandowski blames defenders in Inter draw

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Barcelona’s hopes of reaching the UEFA Champions League round of 16 suffered a huge dent - and Robert Lewandowski is not happy about it.

The 34-year-old forward’s brace was not enough to secure all 3 points against Inter Milan, as the Catalans played a 3-3 draw against the Serie A giants at Camp Nou.

Lewandowski has now blamed Barcelona’s poor defending for the result. He believes they could have done better at preventing Inter Milan from scoring, Football Espana reports.
