  • Memphis Depay feels his choice of visiting Ghana was a divine call from God to attend to the needs of underprivileged kids in the country
  • Since arriving in Ghana last Wednesday, Memphis has embarked on a number of philanthropic works while reconnecting to his roots
  • The 28-year-old is expected to depart the country in the coming week ahead of FC Barcelona's pre-season tour

Dutch-born forward of Ghanaian descent Memphis Depay believes his decision to come to Ghana was divinely orchestrated.

Born to a Ghanaian father and a Dutch mother, Memphis has made it a habit to visit the West African country in the summer for the past few years.

Depay has been in the country since last Wednesday, having engaged in a myriad of activities including meeting the first gentleman of the land, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House.

He also paid homage to the king of Asanteman, Otumfour Osei Tutu II in Kumasi while also engaging in kickabout with natives on a grass-less field.

But among his tall list of activities, Depay prioritises his visit to the Cape Coast School for the Blind and Deaf as dear to his heart, where he single-handedly refurbished the bathrooms and toilets for them.

And according to the former Manchester United and PSV Eindhoven forward, he thinks his visit to Ghana was directed by God.

"I came here with the mission to empower the kids who in my opinion don't get looked after and that is deaf and blind and so for me, I think God gave me a call to come and do that and be there for them. Give them opportunities and help them," Depay told His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo as quoted by Ghanaweb.

Memphis receives president-like treatment after engaging in community football with locals

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Dutch and FC Barcelona forward Memphis Depay received a treatment worthy of a king on the back of engaging in a community game at Madina, a suburb of Accra.

The 28-year-old's down-to-earth attitude has earned him a soft spot in the hearts of many Ghanaians, particularly the youth.

In a video posted on Twitter, sighted by Sports Brief, Memphis Depay received massive love from the youth who gathered to watch a kickabout between Memphis XI and Salisu XI at the Madina Zongo Park.
