Cameroon-born French defender Samuel Umtiti has made a return to his country of birth following the conclusion of the 2021-22 season.

The Barcelona outcast is making a return to the Central African nation for the first time since opting to represent the France national team.

In photos posted on Twitter, sighted by Sports Brief, the 28-year-old guardsman received a rousing welcome on his arrival as a crosssection of fans swarmed Umtiti while taking pictures with him.

After a blistering start to life at Barcelona, a blend of niggling injuries and poor form has seen the French defender fall down the pecking order at the Catalan club.

He also fell out of favour with Barcelona fans after it emerged he was among the players who rejected a pay cut at the height of the club’s financial woes during the peak period of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to reports, the club offered to abrogate his current contract, which ends in 2023, to enable him to walk away for free in the summer but declined the offer.

Despite being on the Barcelona roster, he remains out of the plans of boss Xavi.

Samuel Umtiti confronts angry Barca fan

Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti was recently forced to confront fans after a nasty incident at the club’s training grounds.

Umtiti, whose Barcelona career is on the verge of an unfortunate end, was among the Barca players who were mobbed by fans on Wednesday, December 1, as they left training.

The French superstar was attempting to leave training when a group of five fans stepped in front of his swanky cars and started jumping and chanting.

Mboma opens up on Joel Matip's disinterest in representing Cameroon

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Patrick Mboma has revealed that Liverpool defender Joël Matip is disinterested in playing for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

New Cameroon coach Rigobert Song tried to convince the German-born to join his squad for the games against Algeria, but Matip rejected the request.

According to Mboma, it is unclear if Matip will change his mind in future but for now, he does not want to play for Cameroon.
