Spanish giants Barcelona are targeting to develop their own cryptocurrency to help them survive financially against investors, per reports on ESPN.

According to club president Joan Laporta, the Catalan giants have rejected deals linked with crypto companies because they wish to create their own cryptocurrency and metaverse.

What Laporta said

At the 2022 Mobile World Congress, Laporta gave keynote where he outlined how Barcelona want to embrace new technology to connect with their fans.

"We're developing our own metaverse. [That is why] we rejected the chance to be associated with any cryptocurrency enterprises. "We want to create our own cryptocurrency and we have to do that ourselves.
"We are different because we survive financially from what we can generate through the industry of sport.
"We do not have big corporations or shareholders behind us. That forces us to be imaginative, innovative, brave and be a step ahead in many areas that surround the sports industry."

From a financial standpoint, Barcelona are not in the best place. Having racked up a debt of €1 billion, the club had to offload Lionel Messi to cut down on wages.

Football clubs across the world are gearing up for a new world of opportunities in the digital spectrum. And Barca are taking an innovative route by attempting to develop their own cryptocurrency.
