FC Barcelona have confirmed that Lamine Yamal will play no further part in the 2025-26 La Liga season after suffering a hamstring injury to his left leg, specifically the biceps femoris muscle, during Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo at the Camp Nou.
In an official club statement, Barcelona confirmed the diagnosis following scans conducted on Thursday: “The tests carried out have confirmed that first-team player Lamine Yamal has a hamstring injury in his left leg (biceps femoris muscle). The player will follow a conservative treatment plan. Lamine Yamal will miss the remainder of the season, and he is expected to be available for the World Cup.”
The news represents a significant blow to manager Hansi Flick, who had initially expressed cautious optimism that the injury would not prove serious after the 18-year-old was substituted during the Celta Vigo fixture. Thursday’s scan results, however, delivered the worst possible outcome from a short-term perspective.
The timing is particularly unfortunate given the stage at which Yamal’s season was cut short. The Spanish winger had scored the decisive penalty in Wednesday’s win — the very match in which he sustained the injury — and has been central to Barcelona’s title push throughout the campaign. He finishes the league season with 16 goals, leaving him two short of the record for the most La Liga goals scored by a Spaniard in a single season for the club, a benchmark set by David Villa during the 2010-11 campaign.
Despite Yamal’s absence, Barcelona remain firmly in control of the La Liga title race, holding a nine-point lead at the top of the table with six matches remaining. Flick’s side will need to manage that advantage without their standout performer as rivals look to apply any late pressure.
Beyond the domestic implications, the injury carries considerable weight on the international stage. Spain’s supporters and federation will be monitoring Yamal’s recovery closely ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Spain have been drawn into Group H alongside Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay. The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is set to kick off in June 2026, meaning Yamal has a narrow but reportedly viable window to recover in time.
Hamstring injuries of this nature — involving the biceps femoris — typically carry recovery timelines ranging from four to eight weeks under conservative treatment, though the severity of the specific strain will ultimately determine how quickly the teenager can return to full training and match fitness. Barcelona’s medical staff will manage his rehabilitation programme with the dual objective of ensuring complete recovery and minimising any risk of re-injury ahead of the tournament.
Yamal, who turned 18 in July 2025, has established himself as one of European football’s most consequential players over the past two seasons. He was a key figure in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph and has continued that form at club level, making his latest injury a matter of concern not only for Barcelona but for the Spanish national setup under Luis de la Fuente.
With six La Liga games left and a Champions League campaign still potentially ongoing, Barcelona will be required to redistribute attacking responsibility across their squad as they look to close out what could be a historic season — albeit one that has ended early for their most influential player.
