Mamelodi Sundowns Star Gaston Sirino Expresses Bafana Bafana Wish

• Gaston Sirino has spoken for the first time about the likelihood of playing for South Africa
• The Uruguayan-born striker became a naturalised citizen of the country this season
• This led to talks about him possibly being selected in the near future by Hugo Broos

After a telling silence, Gaston Sirino has had his say about eventually playing for South Africa.

The Uruguayan joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2018 and has lived in the country for the required five years by FIFA in order to play for another nation.

He said to Mamelodi Sundowns' magazine:

“I have had a great time in this beautiful country,” Sirino told Sundowns Magazine when asked about potentially representing South Africa. I love everything about it and if I get presented with the chance to don the national team colours I would jump at the opportunity, but the decision does not rest with me.

“There is no player born in South America who has played for Bafana Bafana and if I receive the call, I would be happy to represent this beautiful nation.”

Sports Brief reported in December that South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan gave his opinion on this interesting development. He said that it would be difficult for current coach Hugo Broos to incorporate the 32-year-old into the squad while looking to the future.
