  • Percy Tau is playing like a new player, putting in inspired performances for Al Ahly SC
  • This was after an injury break which appeared to stall his career indefinitely
  • Apparently, the Cairo-based outfit is now reportedly looking to renew his contract with Burnley said to be interested in him

Since returning from a lengthy injury layoff, Percy Tau is an invigorated player.

The South African has been in fine form for Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC. This has translated into Bafana Bafana as the national team looks to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted in the Ivory Coast next January.

According to Soccer Laduma, rumour has it that the Cairo-based club now wants to tie him down in North Africa. This comes amid reports that he is attracting interest in Europe.

A source told the application:

"Al Ahly wants to keep Percy Tau beyond his current contract. The club [is] aware of the interest in Europe and wants to tie him down to a new contract as soon as possible."

Championship side 'interested' in Tau

Sports Brief had reported that Championship title favourites Burnley were looking to bring in the 28-year-old midfielder.

The Clarets are the runaway leaders in the division and will guarantee themselves a place in the Premier League next season very soon. If the deal happened, Tau would join his national teammate Lyle Foster at the club.

Tau is no stranger to England, having struggled to establish himself at Premier League side Brighton & Albion before moving to Egypt. He made just three appearances while at the southern coast of England, being loaned out to Union SG, Club Brugge and Anderlecht RSC before landing in Cairo.

Broos advises Tau to leave Egypt

Previously, Sports Brief reported that Tau was told to leave Al Ahly.

That was the blunt opinion of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos as he desperately sought to reincorporate him into the national team ahead of crucial 2023 Africa Cup of Nations fixtures. South Africa disappointingly drew 2-2 with Liberia last Friday, and will need to avoid a defeat in the return fixture on Tuesday in Monrovia to retain any hopes of reaching the Ivory Coast.

Incidentally, Tau was rather wasteful in that costly draw and will need to find his scoring boots in a critical fixture.
