  • All ministers for sports, recreation and arts Nathi Mthethwa did was congratulate the men's national football team
  • Bafana Bafana came from behind to defeat Mozambique at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit
  • However, Mthethwa received a frosty and heated reception for the praise he heaped on Hugo Broos' men

To put it mildly, the response to sports minister Nathi Mthethwa's message of congratulation to Bafana Bafana has been mixed.

Hugo Broos' men had to come from behind to defeat Mozambique 2-1 at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Thursday night, which Mthethwa praised.

In a message on his official Twitter page, Mthethwa said:

“Sporting events, even if they are friendlies, help to deepen and cement the relationship between nations. It is against this background that we always encourage our national teams to engage their counterparts from across the globe.”

Unfortunately, there was a spelling mistake that his political adversary Mmusi Maimane ruthlessly pounced in a textbook example of points-scoring.

Maimane, responding to a spelling error on the media statement, quipped:

"Which team is Bafana Bafan?"

This set off a flurry of responses as observers weighed in on this snipe.

2022 FIFA World Cup: Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo disturbed by the lack of PSL players in Qatar

Not one player currently plying their trade in the Premier Soccer League will set foot in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Richard Ofori, Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, was set to form part of Ghana's squad out in the Middle East but was forced to withdraw because of a late-hour injury, as reported by Sports Brief.

This has seen Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo place the albatross around the necks of the players locally.
